Mobile Economy: 44th Fastest Growing Economy

I came across a story today in the Mobile Press Register. According to Bureau of Economic Analysis, the size of Mobile County's economy grew to $13.9 billion in 2006. Controlling for inflation, gross metropolitan product grew 5.6 percent during the year, 44th fastest among the country's 363 metropolitan areas. That was the fastest growth rate among all of Alabama's 12 metropolitan areas. I am not sure why the period reported seems dated (maybe it takes a while to calculate all of the numbers).
