New for the Google Display Network: Show ads related to demographic categories
In March 2009, we announced a beta of interest-based advertising, which included remarketing and interest category marketing, to help Google Display Network advertisers reach people who are most likely to be interested in their products and services.
The early results show that interest-based advertising is helping to deliver better ads and product offers for users, more effective campaigns for advertisers, and higher returns for website publishers. Remarketing was recently launched to all advertisers, and the number of advertisers using interest category marketing has continued to grow.
As part of our efforts to keep improving the product and to give users more control over the ads that they receive, we are adding some new categories that will enable us to show ads that relate to demographic categories, such as age and gender. This works exactly the same way as interest category marketing works today - we associate categories with particular browsers, based on the sites and pages visited on the Google Display Network. To infer demographic categories, Google looks at the types of Google Display Network sites visited, and compares that information with aggregated survey data on site visitation. For example, if someone frequently visits sites that have a majority of female visitors, we may associate her browser's cookie with the “female” demographic category. Then, advertisers may choose to show more ads that are relevant to women to those people as they browse sites across the Google Display Network, the same way advertisers can choose to show ads related to other categories, such as sports or gardening.
As with interest categories, users may view and edit demographic categories or permanently opt out of receiving interest-based ads entirely with the Ads Preferences Manager. The interests and inferred demographics associated with a particular browser are based on the sites on the Google Display Network that are recently visited - and not on user data - so these categories may change over time. I was browsing through the inter webs today and found that Jay-Z got his better half, Beyonce, a private island for her birthday (September 4). She just turned 29 and unstoppable after bagging the 2010 MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration for her chart-topping duet with Lady Gaga "Telephone". Kudos B!

Beverly Hills Homes Mount Stunning Comeback and Rebound 6.7% from 2009 Lows; Auguring Better Times for High-End Los Angeles Real Estate?
If Beverly Hills real estate is any indicator, recent reports that 'The Great Recession' ended in 2009 hold true.
The median sale price of Beverly Hills single family homes has made a stunning turnaround from its low of $2,870,000 in 2009, and is now averaging $3,063,000 year-to-date in 2010, up 6.7% from last year. In spite of the rocky economy, buyers (essentially investors) are looking at Beverly Hills as a safe place to sock away cash that may not be subject to outlier events like the "flash crash" or the likes of Bernie Madoff.
The top sale of the past three months was 1728 Chevy Chase Drive, a 5 bedroom, 7 bath, 7,200 sq ft house on a 20,689 sq ft lot. This Mediterranean tennis court estate sold for $8,300,000. It had been listed in January 2009 for $10,995,000.
630 Mountain Drive, a grand Mediterranean estate on the one of the most exclusive streets in Beverly Hills (just off Sunset, close to Greystone Park), sold for $7,935,110. This 1964 home is a fixer and has 4 bedrooms, 8 baths, 8,287 sq ft of living area on a full acre lot.
Distress is not absent from the Beverly Hills market. 907 N Roxbury Drive was sold in Bankruptcy Court for $7,580,000. This 5 bedroom, 7 bath, 8,394 sq house on a 23,900 sq ft lot is north of Sunset and was built in 1985.
Trousdale Estates was home to 0 Carla Ridge, set on a promontory with views to the Getty, Catalina Island and Downtown. This 4 bedroom, 7 bath house has 6,200 sq ft of living area and is set on a 20,380 sq ft lot. It sold for $7,500,000.
An excellent Beverly Hills rehab opportunity came on the market by Greystone Park, close to the Sunset Strip border. 424 Robert Lane, a 1960's period gem with 6 bedrooms, 9 baths, 6,834 sq ft of living area on a full one acre lot sold for $7,500,000 (somewhat off its list price of $10 million).
Finally, 8643 Clifton Way, a little cottage in the flats of Beverly Hills, almost seemed like a deal, selling in a short sale for $900,000. This 3 bedroom, 2 bath home has 1,286 sq ft of living area on a 5,160 sq ft lot. Just goes to show it doesn't cost a cool million to live the 90210 lifestyle.
U.S. Double Dip Not Likely in 2010
A double dip occurs when home price growth slides back below previous lows after a period of growth.Clear Capital, a provider of data and solutions for real estate asset valuation, investment and risk assessment, has some comments on the real estate market.
"We continue to see softening of home price gains, due in large part to the buyer pullback after the expiration of the tax credit," said Dr. Alex Villacorta, Senior Statistician, Clear Capital. "Overall, prices look poised to continue their deceleration with a likely drop into negative territory by the end of the year. But keep in mind, the price gains we experienced over the past two years are providing a cushion against prices going into double dip territory, meaning it is unlikely we'll see prices below their 2009 lows this year."
"As we head into the final months of the year it will be interesting to see how markets respond to an environment without any buyer incentives," added Dr. Villacorta. "We are observing local markets that are within a few miles of each other diverging in their response to the current housing climate—some are showing strong stable growth and others have yet to reach a price bottom. All of this points to the fact that recovery in the housing market will occur segment by segment in micro markets around the country."
"While local micro markets may face an eventual double dip, it’s important to note that both quarterly and yearly prices at the national and regional levels are still up, and price gains of the last year-and-a-half have created a buffer that will slow the development of a national double dip scenario. So, for a national double-dip to occur, prices would need to drop below their 2009 lows. This would be a complete direction change and decline of 11.7 percent from current levels. Barring a meltdown reminiscent of late 2008, we think it unlikely prices would reach new record lows anytime before spring 2011."

Tools to visualise access to information

Like all companies, Google’s services occasionally experience traffic disruptions. Our new traffic tracking tool helps us and others track whether these interruptions are related to mechanical outages or are government-induced. Each traffic graph shows historic traffic patterns for a given country and service. Graphs are updated as data is collected, then normalized and scaled in units of 0 to 100. This new tool—which is global and includes China—will replace the Mainland China service availability chart, which showed product access for China alone. By showing outages, the traffic graphs visualise disruptions in the free flow of information, whether it's a government blocking information or a cable being cut. For example, the graphs show that YouTube has been inaccessible in Iran since June 12, 2009, following the disputed presidential election.
Free expression is one of our core values. We believe that more information means more choice, more freedom and ultimately more power for the individual. Free expression is, of course, also at the heart of Google’s business. Our products are specifically designed to help people create, communicate, share opinions and find information across the globe. We hope this step toward greater transparency—and these tools—will help in ongoing discussions about the free flow of information.
When Google’s services are blocked or filtered, we can’t serve our users effectively. That’s why we act every day to maximise free expression and access to information. To promote transparency around this flow of information, we’ve built an interactive online Transparency Report with tools that allow people to see where governments are demanding that we remove content and where Google services are being blocked. We believe that this kind of transparency can be a deterrent to censorship.

In April we also created a website that shows the number of government inquiries for information about users and requests for Google to take down or censor content. Today we’re updating this interactive Government Requests map with data from the first six months of 2010. We’ve also updated our analysis of the trends we saw across the data over the past six months. The new data for 2010 now includes the number of individual items asked to be removed, per country (for example, there may be many URLs per a single request.) You can learn more about trends in the data here. We view this as a concrete step that, we hope, will encourage both companies and governments to be similarly transparent.
